We help to raise the attainment of EAL pupils

We provide expertise, support and advice in respect of BAME children and young people, and those who speak English as an additional language (EAL).

The service employs specialist staff, including a professional speech and a language therapist, a counsellor, experienced teachers, highly trained, multilingual assistants (interpreters and translators) and Settlement Officers (OISC qualified) with a broad understanding of Home Office immigration practice and the school admissions process.

Within the team we have access to a vast range of languages and staff with a detailed understanding of education, as well as cultural conventions and practice from around the world.

HEMAS support​

Advice and guidance​
Strategic advice and guidance to schools in order to ensure effective provision for BME pupils and those learning English as an additional language with or without SEN.
Admission process​
Support of the admission process into schools for children who have recently arrived from overseas, including initial English and Maths assessment, provision of background information on issues relating to previous school experience, safeguarding and family situation.
Multilingual Assistance
Provide Multilingual Assistants, who are trained and DBS cleared and can make phone calls to families, support during parents’ evenings and meetings in addition to direct work with newly arrived children and young people.
Training​
Practical and interactive training for teachers and support staff working with EAL: communication techniques, teaching strategies, differentiation, resources,collaborative group learning, etc.
Translations​
Translation service of overseas SEN statements and ongoing support of EAL pupils in obtaining diagnosis and welfare aid.
All in one​
Advice and bespoke training on Immigration and welfare. Specialist EAL pupil assessments at both primary and secondary level.
